Global Children’s Designathon held in Croatia for the first time

On November 12 2016 Zagreb was one of global hosts of the Global Children’s Designathon project. Using the method of design thinking the children who participated created prototypes of products for better future and thus experienced circular economy in practice.

Innovative and educational workshop for children Global Children’s Designathon was held for the first time in Zagreb on November 12, in the organization of Design Centre Zagreb, in partnership with Croatian Design Superstore, and with the support of Embassy of the Netherlands in Croatia, IBM Croatia, Google, Atlantic and Biovega. Journal and Dječji događaji were media partners of the project. In the Superstore’s creative space in Martićeva 4, children who participated in the design thinking based workshop addressed the issues of circular economy in practice.

With expert mentors, twenty-seven children aged 7 to 12 years old created product prototypes for better and sustainable future. The renowned experts in design, architecture and art who guided the children through design thinking and circular economy in practise were:

  • Ivana Fabrio – designer and freelance artist, assistant professor at School of Design in Zagreb and leader of numerous international cooperation and social design projects
  • Mia Roth Čerina – awarded architect and assistant professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, leader of the Architecture and Children program of the Croatian Chamber of Architects and Croatian representative in the international Architecture and Children program at the International Union of Architects (UIA)
  • Roberto Vdović – architect, scientist, entrepreneur and president of the innovative association Fablab Croatia
  • Margareta Peršić – versatile artist and storyteller, member of the Croatian Freelance Artists’ Association and Croatian Association of Artists of Applied Arts, best described by the phrase ”I paint, therefore I am”.

The whole day workshop began with playing a game until the children got acquainted and continued through phases of design thinking methodology for children by Designathon Works association: theme presentation, research, idea sketch, prototype sketch, its making and final presentation. During the workshop the children were also virtually connected with their fellow participants in Amsterdam and exchanged impressions and first ideas of prototypes, which caused great enthusiasm of participants from both cities.

The organizers provided the children with opportunity to present their ideas and prototypes to special audience – respected experts in innovation, design and technology who, together with the expert mentors, contributed to the quality experience of the workshop for children:

  • Nikola Žinić, founder and creative director @ Bruketa & Žinić full service advertising agency
  • Darije Ramljak, Associate Partner, CEE Mobile & Digital Leader @ IBM
  • Marina Jukić, design lead @ Infinum

Therefore Zagreb this year became part of global network with Dublin, Amsterdam, Berlin, Tunis, Nairobi, Panjim, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro and Willemstad. Global Children’s Designathon is an ambitious initiative started in Amsterdam in 2014 by Designathon Works. The project’s goal is to include children of elementary school age in creation of smart future and sustainable economy.
