‘The Balance’ by Anton Höger in Gallery Ring

How the Steel Was Tempered in Booksa

Thursday, January 19 in literary club Booksa will be under the sign of a cult novel How the Steel Was Tempered by Russian and Ukrainian writer Nikolai Ostrovsky (1904. ― 1936.), classic author of communist literature.

The book is the only one Ostrovsky was able to finish during the course of his life, suffering for years from paralysis as a consequence of wounding in the aftermath of the October Revolution. Afterwards he also suffered from total blindness. However, after his untimely death the novel spread his fame across the world and well into the contemporary times.

“For Ostrovsky, everything is fused by the flame of action and battle, and this flame rises and burns more and more as night and death are closer to surrounding it. The writer comes from tireless bravery and optimist, while his lust for life connects him with all fierce and progressive people of the world.” Romain Rolland, 1936.

In order to get yourself acquainted with Ostrovsky, you can find the book here for free:
